WORKSHOP: December 10th, 2023

We are excited to announce a new project on the horizon with The Winnipeg Actors Academy!

"The Actors Gym" is not your typical acting class—it's an immersive experience crafted to elevate your skills and push the boundaries of your artistic expression. These intensive, three-hour workshops will be centered around practical exercises, collaborative activities, and personalized feedback, creating an environment that mirrors the challenges and excitement of real-world acting.

In the first session, we're delving into the fundamental elements that lie at the heart of powerful performances: "Stakes and Intention."

This three-hour session is meticulously crafted to help actors not only understand but master the art of infusing their characters with depth, purpose, and authenticity.

1. Understanding Stakes:

  • Defining the Importance: Explore the significance of stakes in acting. Stakes add tension and emotional weight to a scene, driving characters to make choices that resonate with the audience.

  • Identifying Personal and Scene Stakes: Learn how to identify both personal and scene-specific stakes. Understand the impact of individual character objectives and how they contribute to the overall narrative tension.

  • Creating Tension and Conflict: Discover techniques for building tension and conflict within a scene. Explore how elevated stakes can transform an ordinary moment into a gripping, emotionally charged exchange.

2. Crafting Intention:

  • Defining Character Objectives: Dive deep into the concept of character objectives. Understand how knowing what your character wants in a given moment informs their intentions and actions.

  • Aligning with the Story: Explore how character intentions contribute to the larger narrative arc. Learn to align individual character objectives with the overarching themes of the play or script.

  • Layering Intentions for Complexity: Delve into the nuances of intention by layering multiple objectives. Understand how conflicting intentions can add complexity and richness to your character's portrayal.

3. Practical Application:

  • Scene Analysis and Performance: Apply the concepts of stakes and intention to scene work. Receive guidance on dissecting a script, identifying key stakes, and infusing intention into your performance.

  • Feedback and Collaboration: Engage in collaborative exercises with fellow actors to experiment with different stakes and intentions. Receive constructive feedback from instructors and peers to refine your approach.

  • Personalized Coaching: Benefit from one-on-one coaching sessions to address specific challenges and refine your understanding of stakes and intention in the context of your unique character.

4. Takeaways:

  • Enhanced Emotional Resonance: Learn how to connect with your character on a deeper level, resulting in performances that resonate emotionally with the audience.

  • Improved Scene Dynamics: Acquire tools to elevate scene dynamics by incorporating high-stakes moments and clear character intentions.

  • Increased Artistic Confidence: Develop the confidence to make bold choices and fully commit to the emotional journey of your character.
